Intent
At Burford Primary School we aim to plan and deliver a history curriculum that is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. The curriculum is structured in a way that allows for children to make links between current and previous learning. Teachers make explicit comparisons between historical periods taught, developing children’s chronological knowledge and understanding from the Stone Age to present day. Our teaching of history will help pupils gain a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
We aim for children to be curious about the past and to have the skills required to explore their own interests. History lessons focus on working as historians and developing historical skills and, where possible, we plan opportunities for the curriculum to be enriched through historical visits, visitors and events held in school.
We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. It is important for children to develop a sense of identity through learning about the past and we want them to know how history has shaped their own lives.
Implementation
We teach the History National Curriculum as part of a three-year rolling programme, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression: this ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. At the beginning of each block, children link the time period studied to previous periods studied, enabling them to build a deeper understanding of the past through time and around the world. Questioning skills are developed through example ’key questions’ to start a block of work which then prompt further questions from the class: this informs the programme of study and ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points and pupil voice. Key historical language and historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance are revisited frequently, to make learning deeper, relevant and easy to retrieve. We support learning with trips to inspire our children and widen their cultural experiences. Teachers are also encouraged to use a range of resources such as videos, artefacts, photographs and newspaper articles during lessons to help create immersive learning experiences and to develop an understanding of evidence.
Impact
The impact of our History curriculum is measured in a variety of ways: questioning during lesson time, marking children’s written work, listening to child-led discussion, interviewing pupils across the school about their learning, book looks and using images/videos of children’s practical learning.
